Edward Fiorelli will perform a public reading of his essay "The Dancing Barber." The piece is part of a collection of short stories, sketches and personal essays focusing on the theme of ethnicity, particularly the Italo-American experience in an "urbanized village" environment like that of Staten Island. The theme of this essay is our human need for spectacle as a way of coping with the harsher realities of life.

Creating pysanky is a folk art tradition from Ukraine in which eggs are decorated with many colors and intricate designs by skilled artists. Folk artist Tania Snihur will demonstrate the art of pysanky. A limited number of spaces will be available for those who wish to make their own pysanky. Ed Weiss will read excerpts from his novel, Peter Pigeon of Snug Harbour. The book is written in the tradition of the "bildungsroman," a novel about growing up and finding oneself. Weiss, a Stapleton resident, will also be reading from other writings. His non-fiction writing has appeared in dozens of magazines and in books published by Prentice Hall and Carroll & Graf.

The National Women's Dance Troupe of Sri Lanka will present traditional Sri Lankan dance (Kandyan Dance), highlighted by discussion and description. Highly sophisticated and beautiful, Kandyan dance is considered the national dance of Sri Lanka. The dancers wear elaborate costumes, and are accompanied by a drum called the Geta Beraya, and a small pair of cymbals knows as the Thalampota.

Melody Alesi, soprano and Joseph Turrin, pianist, will present as a recital team. Ms. Alesi's voice is noted for her vocal color and expression, while Mr.Turrin's talent as a composer spans many genres. Specializing in American songs and works by contemporary composers, Ms. Alesi and Mr. Turrin made their debut as a recital team at Caramoor, Festival of the Arts and are recording a CD of Mr. Turrin's vocal works.

Pinilla's paintings depict landscapes of her home, India. Pinilla creates various types of texture, woven patterns, strokes of different strengths and multiple layers of paint. Chandini Pinilla was drawn to fine arts at a very young age. She's won prizes and awards in several nationwide art competitions. She has had several exhibitions in major cities and her works are in many collections in India and abroad. Exhibit is on view June 1 – 30. Artist’s reception June 17 at 2pm.

Arrow Muller's interests lie in residual decomposition and ideas about formal sculpture. His JuneFest Art Exhibit will explore building structures by questioning what is residual and what is not. Mueller uses impact craters as a metaphor to examine what is residual. Arrow Mueller has exhibited in several group shows, including at PS1. His work over time had brought him to think more about time itself, and to concentrate on how time can be represented by what is left behind. Exhibit is on view June 1 through 30.

This presentation is an opportunity for Hugentobler to present her series of portraits. The portraits were recently completed, since her return to Staten Island in 2005. The exhibition will feature a grouping of anonymous portraits in clay, which the artist conceived as an experiment in casting and surface treatment. For Hugentobler, the process of construction and decoration of each portrait is integral to the content. The artist sees each portrait as an opportunity to investigate family history and memory. Exhibit is on view June 1 through 30. Closing reception Thursday, June 22, 5-7pm.

Jenna Lucente's JuneFest Art Exhibition is from two main bodies of artworks completed in the past few years. One theme is a gymnastic series on the subject matter of the gymnast to raise questions of self-worth, the idea of role playing, and the premise of threat. The other theme is a swimming series, which uses the same premises as the gymnastics series. All paintings are intentionally flattened to give the viewer a selected view. Lucente is a swimmer who is creatively inspired in the pool or gymnasium. Currently she teaches part time at a number of different education facilities, including Wagner College. Exhibit is on view June 1 through 30. Closing reception Sunday, June 25, 1-3pm.

Works selected for this exhibit were produced beginning just before 9/11, and include the before 9/11, and include the Stapleton on Staten Island. Living downtown for nearly 30 years allowed Brickhouse to develop a specific vocabulary that included the architectural drama of the narrowed part of the Island between the Rivers. The exhibit will feature oils on canvassed wood panels, and paintings in gouache on paper. Brickhouse's work has shown at Pamela Auchincloss, Max Protech, and Julian Pretto galleries. Fresco artist and painter Robert Bunkin's exhibit, "Under Construction," is a collective portrait of, and homage to, the Chinese artisans who came here in 1998 to build the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden in the Staten Island Botanical Gardens at Snug Harbor Cultural Center. The portraits are painted in true fresco, on contemporary, mass-produced cement blocks similar to those used in the foundation walls of the garden. Robert Bunkin is a figurative painter, art historian (faculty of Parsons School of Design) and freelance curator. Exhibit is on view June 8 through 30. Opening Reception Friday, June 9, 6-8pm.

Stuart Kuhlman presents "Ferry Reflections," an exhibit dealing with the numerous travelers who take the Staten Island Ferry. Most are in transit to work and are preoccupied with the mundane tasks ahead of them. Kuhlman captures the many different angles and perspectives that are missed by the people that use this vital part of NYC infrastructure. Stuart Kuhlman grew up on Staten Island and moved to the West Coast, where he explored photography. Kuhlman, once again a Staten Island resident, has photographed the urban landscape with a digital camera, and is exploring 35mm black-and-white film. Exhibit is on view June 1 – 30. Henry Kim's Revealation is a video piece documenting the process of his paintings, which will accompany the artwork at his exhibit. His unique artistic process includes a variety of mediums, in particular by painting with transparent adhesive, unable to predict the composition. He uses fire to burn in images, revealing a discovery that manifests its presence. Henry Kim graduated with his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2005. He studied advanced painting in Florence, Italy and focuses on Korean culture, language, and history. Exhibit is on view June 1 through 30. Opening Reception Friday, June 9, 6-8pm.
