On Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 11:30am-4:00pm, residents from all over Staten Island can experience "Treasure Your Island," the fourth annual community awareness day taking place at Fort Wadsworth. It's all free and open to the public.
Staten Island has a lot to offer: two art schools, the only Chinese Scholar Garden in the US, a museum dedicated to Tibetan art and culture, and over twenty city, state, and federal parks. Spend the day at historic Fort Wadsworth, and tour places like Battery Weed and Fort Tompkins, normally closed to the general public. Guided tours will take people around the forts, and historical reenactments will entertain visitors throughout the day.
In the past three years, over 3,500 people have attended “Treasure Your Island.” Over twenty cultural, environmental, historical, and recreational institutions are invited, and will have information about programs and events for adults, children, and families, as well as products for purchase. Residents can learn about all the great things to do on the island, meet new people, and new organizations, and gives students the chance to learn about volunteer opportunities close to home.
This is a rain or shine event because performances and information tables will be moved inside if the weather is inclement.
