Staten Island Half Marathon
The Staten Island Half Marathon is set for Sunday, October 14 this year, just four weeks before the famous New York City Marathon. The race features views of New York Harbor and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and is suited for runners of all skill level. It’s the final run of the New York Road Runners (NYRR) Five-Borough Series, which holds a different marathon for each borough throughout the course of the year: The United Airlines NYC Half, the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, the NYRR Queens 10K, the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile, and the NYRR Staten Island Half. Swap Some Candy; Support the Troops
Let’s face it—trick-or-treating is fun; cavities are not. Instead of gobbling up all those sweet treats, get your kids to do something even sweeter with their stash. In the annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, dentists “buy back” candy from generous youngsters in exchange for cash, coupons, or other creative currencies. The collected candy is then distributed to military support groups and shipped to service members abroad. To learn more about this wonderful initiative, which is now in its 13th year, go to www.HalloweenCandyBuyBack.com.

The participating dentists in Staten Island are:
Kids Dental • 4864 Arthur Kill Road • 718-356-543 (CONFIRMED)
Phyllis G. Merlino • 268 Todt Hill Road • 718-761-2090

The Teal Pumpkin Project
Halloween can be a different kind of scary for thousands of children on Staten Island with food allergies.

The Teal Pumpkin Project is an awareness initiative that will help identify homes and locations that offer safe alternatives for trick-or-treaters with food allergies. To participate, simply paint a pumpkin teal and place it on your porch or download and print a picture of a teal pumpkin as a sign to other families managing food allergies that you have non-food treats available at your home. Your teal pumpkin is also a way to raise awareness in your neighborhood about food allergies!

The Teal Pumpkin Project is Food Allergy Research and Education’s Halloween Initiative to help raise awareness and provide a way for all children to enjoy Trick-or-Treating safely. Click here to download a free Teal Pumpkin printable sign. If you don’t have a color printer, have your child color the flyer with a teal crayon or marker.

Falling Back
You probably don’t need a reminder to set your clocks back now that the world runs on smart phones and advanced technology. But you could still use a reminder that your schedule is about to be thrown off course. It’s time to “fall back” into the shorter days and longer nights of autumn as we prepare to turn back the clocks early next month. Daylight Savings Time ends at 2am on Sunday, November 4, 2017. Enjoy the extra hour of weekend sleep! Unless you have kids, of course.

Italian Bred is Back
There’s certainly no shortage of crazy families here on Staten Island. That’s probably why Candace Guardino’s one-woman show about her own crazy family sold out last year when she finally brought it home to her native borough. Italian Bred is a firsthand journey through Candice’s life growing up in Staten Island through spot-on impersonations of family members and virtual cameos by celebrities like Sex and the City’s Mario Cantone and Sopranos’ Steve Schirripa. Candace describes it as a “full theatrical experience,” where she sings and entertains the audience by slipping in and out of colorful characters throughout the 85-minute show. The former Woodrow resident and Wagner College graduate will be performing her critically-acclaimed show at the College of Staten Island on Saturday, November 3. You can get your tickets at italianbredshow.com.

Holiday Fairs
Is your school or organization hosting a holiday fair this season? The upcoming November and December issues of S.I. Parent will feature our annual list of local holiday fairs in Staten Island. The list will also be featured online at siparent.com. Please email the time, date, location and additional details of your holiday fair to [email protected], with the subject line “Holiday Fairs” to ensure your event is featured on our list. Don’t let your school miss out!

Free CPR Training
Simply put, CPR saves lives. That’s why the FDNY Foundation has partnered with NYC Service to fund a free CPR training program in all five boroughs. Taught by certified FDNY EMS personnel, the program equips New Yorkers with the skills to act in the event of cardiac arrest. You can register online for a free CPR training session across the five boroughs. The FDNY Mobile CPR Unit will also host bystander CPR Training sessions at your location for groups of 15 or more. Although the program will not result in certification, it will teach participants the necessary basics in a life-threatening situation. Get more info or sign up here.
