Staten Island’s wreath competition is back on the South Shore, along with a holiday toy drive to provide gifts to children in need.

Get ready for some community-wide festive fun and holiday cheer as Staten Island’s wreath-making competition returns to the South Shore along with a holiday toy drive.

Wreath-Making Competition: Deck the Streets

Looking to create a new family tradition? Consider taking part in Staten Island’s wreath-making competition, Deck the Streets, organized through a partnership between Council Member Joe Borelli’s office, the South Shore Business Improvement District and ArtBridge Projects.

Enter this year’s holiday wreath-making competition and pick up a wreath to-go. Here’s how it works:

While supplies last, free wreaths and art materials will be provided to participants for pick-up at Council Member Borelli’s district office, located at 2955 Veterans Road W. Suite 2E. From now until Dec. 4, artists, friends and families can come to pick up materials and supplies to craft their fun holiday masterpiece!

Wreaths can be decorated in any holiday or family theme. Participants should feel free to add any additional embellishments.

Participants are asked to return wreaths to the council member’s office by Dec. 7  so their wreaths can be spotlighted throughout the towns of Annadale, Eltingville and Great Kills. Staten Islanders will have an opportunity to vote online for their favorite wreaths. Voting submissions will be open from December 11 – December 22, 2023.

Staten Islanders can vote here.

“Our wreath event has gotten bigger and better each year since we began just a few years ago. I can’t wait to see what creative wreaths are returned this year,” Borelli said. “Thank you ArtBridge for our partnership to purchase the free items used to make the wreaths and the South Shore Business Improvement District for donating the gift cards to our winners to use to support local small businesses! Let the games begin!”

Prizes for Staten Island’s Wreath Competition

There’s more fun to be had, as prizes are part of the competition, too. The top three winners of Staten Island’s wreath competition will be eligible to receive a “BID Bucks” gift card, provided by the South Shore BID for any small business within the towns of Annadale, Eltingville and Great Kills of their choosing.

“Each year the wreaths are a welcome addition to our holiday lighting here in the towns of Annadale, Eltingville and Great Kills,” Gary Fleming, president of the South Shore Business Improvement District, said. “Last year we had some creative and unique ideas. I can’t wait to see the wreaths this year and to cast my vote for my favorite ones. Best of luck to all of this year’s participants.”

Holiday Toy Drive

Staten Islanders can also participate in a holiday toy drive organized by Council Member Borelli and the non-profit group, Where to Turn.

As part of the toy drive, Staten Islanders can donate new and unwrapped toys for boys and girls, ages 5-15. Toys can be sent or dropped off at Borelli’s district office, located at 2955 Veterans Road W., Suite # 2E 10309 from 9am – 4pm, through Dec. 18.

“I am proud of my constituents, who each year donate so many toys to help make the holidays just a little brighter for children on our island. I look forward to seeing all of the wonderful items we get this year. Thank you in advance for your donations,” Borelli said.

Psst… check out where to donate your children’s old toys and where to donate clothes on Staten Island.

For more information or if you have questions about accessibility, contact Council Member Joe Borelli’s office at borelli@council.nyc.gov or 718-984-5151.
