10 Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month in Staten Island 

Women’s History Month is here! Every March, we celebrate women: the brave women whose contributions to society paved the way for future generations, as well as the wonderful women who continue to be shining examples for young girls today.

There are plenty of kid-friendly events and exhibitions around Staten Island this month where your family can enrich their knowledge of all things Women’s History through crafts, activities, celebrations, presentations, and more.

Heading off Staten Island? Here’s our roundup of Women’s History Month Events around NYC and Long Island. 

The Alice Austen House Museum 

March 9th, 11 am-1 pm

2 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10305

Hours, 12:00 pm- 4:00 pm

Visit the Alice Austen House in Staten Island and learn all about one of America’s earliest woman photographers. Celebrate this woman’s work by exploring and analyzing her historic photographs. Additionally, on March 9th attend the exhibition opening of “Worm, root, wort… & bane” which features photographs and sculptures by Ann Shelton. The event will run from March 9th to May 26th. Invite the entire family to come support and celebrate women artists. 

Women’s History Month presentation by Naomi Basner 

March 9th, 11 am- 2 pm

The Pride Center of Staten Island

Senior Participant Naomi Basner will be conducting an intergenerational presentation on women in history and feminism for all ages.

Women in Conservation

Celebrate Women’s History Month with the Urban Park Rangers! Hike the park while celebrating the accomplishments of women essential to nature and wildlife conservation, past and present. Enjoy guest speaker, Dr. Shannon Curley, an ecologist for Freshkills Park Alliance. 

Superheroines Collage!

March 12th, 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm

West New Brighton Library, 976 Castleton Avenue, 10310

In celebration of Women’s History Month, create collages featuring popular Comic Book Heroines!  Select your favorite superhero cut-out and create a mixed-media background using newspapers, magazines, paint markers, and more! 

National Girls & Women in Sports Day

March 16th, 2024

NYC Parks is celebrating National Girls & Women in Sports Day 2024. NGWSD provides residents the opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of female athletes, sports influencers, and sports professionals.

Manzulli Boardroom: Josephine Baker; Icon and Image

Join Dr. Bennetta Jules-Rosette, the director of African and African-American Studies Research Center and distinguished professor of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego, as she untangles some of Josephine Baker’s complex cultural choices, her performative strategies of assimilation and doubling, and lessons on race, gender, and identity for a new generation.

Swing by the Atrium to sit back, relax, color, and learn about influential figures in Women’s History with the Center for Intercultural Advancement.

Union Atrium: Women’s History Month Jeopardy

Test your Knowledge of Women’s History and Win a few sweet treats by playing a fun game of Jeopardy.

Manzulli Boardroom: Women’s History Month Lecture: When Women Ruled the World

A lecture by Kara Cooney, renowned Professor of Egyptology at UCLA and Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, entitled ‘When Women Ruled the World.’ The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Foundation Hall atrium and an exhibit in Horrmann Library featuring the Archaeology Society of Staten Island archival collection and library gift.

STEAMtastic! Yayoi Kusama’s Dots

March 14, 4 – 4:45 pm 

Mariners Harbor Library, 206 South Ave, 10303

This program will take place in person at the Mariners Harbor Library. Join staff from the Mariners Harbor Library as we celebrate Women’s History Month with a hands-on program all about artist Yayoi Kusama! Learn all about the “Princess of Polka Dots” and create your art piece inspired by the artist.

The Paper Doll Revolution Art Workshop

March 16th, 12 PM – 3 PM

Snug Harbor, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Building P, 2nd fl

Staten Island, 10301

The Paper Doll Revolution Art Workshop will highlight revolutionary women in history using paper dollmaking techniques in celebration of Women’s History Month. By creating these doll figures, participants will learn about sheros of social justice such as Frida Kahlo, Audre Lorde, Dorothy Day, and Yuri Kochiyama.

STEAMtastic! Frida’s Flowers

This program will take place in person at the Mariners Harbor Library. Join staff from the Mariners Harbor Library as they celebrate Women’s History Month with a hands-on program all about artist Yayoi Kusama. Learn all about the queen of the self-portrait and create your art piece inspired by the artist.

Girls in Science and Engineering Day

March 9th, 11 am-3 pm 

Intrepid Museum, Pier 86 West 46th Street New York, NY 10036

Get ready for the 10th annual Girls in Science and Engineering Day! This milestone year is to celebrate girls and youth involved in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). The in-person event will feature hands-on experiences, exciting demonstrations, and captivating discussions led by experts from Intrepid Museum, Cooper Union, Hudson River Park, Women in Aviation New York Chapter, invited mentors, and more!
