When Your Child Gets Their First Period

It’s that time of the month… for the first time. Periods or menstruation cycles are nothing to be ashamed of. Many different emotions float around when your child experiences their first period: confusion, excitement, and embarrassment, among others. As a parent, you want to support and educate your child on menstruation and all the things that come with it. Let us break it down and ease your mind on what to do when your child gets their first period.

Educate Ahead

According to the National Institution of Health, menstruation usually occurs between the ages of 10 and 16. That may seem like a large gap but note that every single body is different and experiences different changes at different times. The first period will usually come around the time that your child is experiencing symptoms of puberty. For example, body development, acne, body hair, and more. During this time, let your child know what to expect beforehand. Let your child know that getting your period is natural and something that all women go through.

Pull from Experience

Growing up the middle child, I had the privilege of having an older sister who had gotten hers and could talk to me about it. All I wanted was someone to understand me and what was going on with my body just like most children do. Therefore, it is helpful to share with your child your own experiences with menstruation or give an example—the less taboo the subject the better.

Be Prepared

As your child is navigating puberty be prepared for surprises. Be prepared for questions, feelings, and meltdowns. These changes are new and scary for some children. Do your best to be an open ear for your child. The first period may come as a surprise to both you and your child. It is a good period product in the house or on hand. It is important to recognize all feelings. Be there for your child as a safe space for them to share, whether it is excitement, confusion, or sadness.

Celebrate

Periods are nothing to be ashamed of! During this new change, treating your child to something special may make the transition easier. Celebrating this new change can immensely help your child feel better. There are so many ways to celebrate, whether it is a party, shopping or even treating her to a day out like a spa day or for ice cream sundaes. This is your chance to create a core memory with your child and make it special.
