Why Families Find Their Place at the Bernikow JCC

Why Families Find Their Place at the Bernikow JCC

For Staten Island families, life moves quickly. One season brings preschool decisions. The next is afterschool schedules, swim lessons, sports, enrichment, camp registration, and finding places where children can feel supported as they grow. Along the way, many parents are looking for something increasingly hard to find — a place that feels welcoming, dependable, and built around more than just activities.

For generations, the Staten Island JCC has played that role for families across the borough. The JCC is more than a destination for programs; it is a place where children build confidence, friendships, independence, and a sense of belonging. From early childhood education and summer camp to youth sports, aquatics, arts, enrichment, and teen programming, the JCC provides opportunities for children to explore interests, develop new skills, and grow alongside their peers in a supportive environment.

For younger children, that growth may begin with a first classroom experience, a nurturing preschool environment, or family-centered programs that help build comfort and confidence. As children get older, it may mean discovering a new passion through sports or the arts, learning to swim, joining afterschool programs, or finding a welcoming place to connect with friends and mentors. Summer camp often becomes another meaningful milestone — a place where independence grows, friendships deepen, and lasting memories are made.

What families often value most is not just the variety of programs, but the role those experiences play over time. Confidence develops when children try something new. Friendships form through shared experiences. Skills build gradually — in classrooms, on courts, in pools, on stages, and through summers filled with adventure and discovery.

At every age and stage, the Staten Island JCC strives to create experiences that help children thrive. Because when families find the right place, they feel connected and supported.
