Art Lab: Nurturing Creativity Across Generations

Art Lab is located on the beautiful grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center, offering fine art, applied art, and photography classes during the winter, spring, summer, and fall sessions. Founded 50 years ago by Staten Island artists as an artist collective, Art Lab classes are taught by professional teaching artists who have fine arts degrees and have continued to practice art making, and who continue to exhibit their work.

Classes are available for young artists, teens, and adults, starting at age 3 with Pre-k Art. At Art Lab, students enjoy the tradition of creative art making, learning from working artists, most of whom are a part of the Staten Island community. Camp Picasso for ages 6-12 and Camp Kandinsky for preschoolers are summer staples at Art Lab. Campers make art in various media such as drawing, painting, collaging, and sculpting. All campers receive a free Art Lab T-shirt to color on their first day of camp. Weather permitting, campers will also explore the grounds and play. Full and half days are available. Rolling registration all summer long, until camp fills, and session options for 2,4,6,or 8 weeks makes it convenient and flexible for busy summer schedules. Also, look for Special Week in June and Encore Week in September.

Art classes are available all year, including summer, for young artists and adults. Children’s Art, Creations, Young People’s Art, Comic Book Art, Pre-K Art, Teen Ceramic, Teen Painting and Drawing, Anime and Manga are some offerings for youth. Adult classes include painting, drawing, watercolor, printmaking, ceramics, digital photography, and stained glass. Art Lab provides many other services to the Staten Island community with programs, events, and gallery exhibitions. For those looking for a challenging arts program, there is the Summer Studio Scholarship Program, a summer intensive, where teen and adult students refine their arts skills in a studio setting, working with university-level teaching artists. Art Lab hosts birthday parties and class trips, too. Come to Art Lab’s Annual Open House this September 12th for a day of free demos and mini classes.
