Looking to get in shape? Now is a perfect time to start becoming the best you that you can be! Maintaining a good diet and sticking to a workout routine can be tough at first, but it’s a little easier when you live on Staten Island. See, the borough is packed with lots of gyms, fitness centers, options for nutritious food and so much more that’ll make your journey to healthy living a little bit easier. Browse our guide to fitness studios and gyms on Staten Island, as well as health food restaurants, great places to go jogging and more, and be on your way fitness fun.

One thing to note, when it comes to gyms on Staten Island, it’s a good idea to call ahead to find out about prices, as many require monthly or annual membership fees.

Being comfortable at the gym

Being new to a gym can be intimidating to some folks. If this describes you, it might be helpful to review a gym’s policies page about safety and etiquette. Many gyms, such as Planet Fitness, discourage intimidating behavior. This can include “showcasing,” which Planet Fitness describes as “flexing, strutting or making an effort to attract attention.”

But remember, you have as much of a right to be at the gym as anyone else. And if you need more motivation for getting in shape, remember that fitness and eating right may be some of the best things you can do for your health. According to the Mayo Clinic, physical activity can reduce your risk of chronic disease, improve your balance and coordination, help you lose weight and boost your self esteem.

And now, on to our fun fitness guide!

Walking, Jogging and Running on Staten Island

There are plenty of gyms on Staten Island, but there are lots of options for working out outdoors in the fresh air, too. There are many parks and other areas that offer terrain for all levels of cardio ability, whether you want to go for a brisk walk or fast run with hills and natural inclines. These are just a few exercise-friendly locations to consider for your next outdoor workout:

Your neighborhood. Go for an after-dinner stroll with the family. Jog or run along a safe route (it’s a good idea to wear bright or reflective clothing if you go running after hours). Change up your route every so often to prevent boredom from traveling along the same paths all the time.

Clove Lakes Park. Parks are like nature’s gyms on Staten Island! Walk briskly or run through scenic trails within this 193-acre park. Afterward, stop by the Staten Island Zoo, located nearby, to get in some more light walking by visiting the different animal exhibits!

Blue Heron Park. Smaller than Clove Lakes Park, Blue Heron Park is great for enjoying an easy and relaxing hike into nature. There’s a beautiful pond, wooden bridges and lots of trees that live throughout the park.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach. Head outdoors onto this 2.5-mile boardwalk on Staten Island, and enjoy scenic views along the way. Love running? Check out the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex located nearby, too.
