Free Family Events for the Week of 8/27-9/02
NYU Langone Back-to-School Resource Fair Family Health Centers (FHC) at NYU Langone will host its annual Back-to-School Resource Fair, offering free backpacks, school supplies, and essential community services. The fair will feature health screenings, informational sessions, children’s entertainment, demonstrations, and an adult activity area. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 11 am – 3 pm. All ages. Launch Event: Hello, Tobi! Join author-illustrator Andrea Cáceres as she introduces kids to the friendliest pup in town with her latest picture book Hello, Tobi! It’s a celebration of families of all shapes and sizes, courtesy of one little pup with a lot of love to give! Movie Nights on the Overlook Minecraft: The Movie Ahead of the ice season, Wollman is soaking up the last bits of warm weather with Movie Nights on the Overlook. Grab your blankets and lawn chairs, as Wollman transforms its scenic overlook into an open-air cinema. See Minecraft: The Movie underneath the stars of Central Park – the city’s most iconic backdrop, giving guests the opportunity to relax, take in sweeping skyline views, and enjoy a movie-night experience in a setting that’s uniquely NYC. 16th Annual NYC Unicycle Festival at Hudson River Park This annual Festival brings together recreational riders, world-class performers, mountain and off-road unicycle enthusiasts, mono-wheel vehicle inventors, and thousands of people who have not ridden in umpteen years, along with circus enthusiasts, extreme sports viewers, and anyone seeking an unusual sight–even for NYC! Participants and spectators can enjoy races, workshops, exhibitions, and games like unicycle basketball and hockey, a demonstration by King Charles Troupe, games, and relays. Adventure Course Free Public Sunday Program See what your family is made of at this fun and challenging outdoor ropes course. Activities include both high and low ropes elements with challenges for all ages and all physical abilities. Low elements take place on the ground or on cables suspended a few inches off the ground. High elements are constructed with utility poles and require a helmet, harness, and belay system for safety. Aug. 31-Oct. 12, Sundays, 10 am – noon and 1 – 3 pm. All ages. Arrive early to register. CityParks PuppetMobile: Pippi Longstocking City Parks Foundation is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the world-renowned children’s story Pippi Longstocking by the legendary Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. To honor this milestone, the PuppetMobile will present Pippi, a fresh retelling of the classic Swedish tale. The production features nearly two dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers. In addition to the brilliant artistry of the production, kids and families will enjoy the incredible adventures of quick-witted and super-strong Pippi as she overcomes bullies, all while fending off unnecessary social conventions.
