Liberty Science Center’s New Thomas the Tank Exhibit Delights Kids of All Ages

January 30, 2023 By Barbara Russo

All aboard for fun! Gather up the family and head to Liberty Science Center in Jersey City for its newest exhibit, Thomas & Friends: Explore the Rails, featuring Thomas the Tank and his friends from the popular TV series.

The interactive exhibit, which opened Jan. 28, gives kids and their caregivers an opportunity to learn and have fun. They’ll immerse themselves in locations from the show. Young learners can practice counting objects, comparing sizes, and learning colors. Older kids can practice their math skills, learn basic engineering concepts, discover science ideas through play, and see how technology works to keep engines running.

Kids will delight in seeing the smiling faces of Thomas, Percy, Victor and the others at the exhibit, which was created by Minnesota Children’s Museum in partnership with Mattel, Inc. It is nationally presented by Fisher Price.

What to Expect at the Thomas the Tank Exhibit at LSC

Here are some of the fun activities kids will enjoy at the exhibit:

  • Head into the cool blue train cab and explore the engine’s inner workings.
  • Dress in a conductor’s uniform. Then, load and sort freight and baggage onto train cars.
  • Take pictures next to a mural of Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt. (Great for a cute collection of Insta photos!)
  • Do some cool planning. Create routes or spurs with toy trains and track pieces. And, build bridges and travel around the island at the Island Exploration Table.
  • Fix Percy’s engine with oversized nuts, bolts, wheels, rods and wrenches. Get him ready to chug at Sodor Steamworks!

By the way, while you’re at Liberty Science Center, stop by and say hello to the amazing animals who live here. These include slithery snakes, colorful parrots and adorable chinchillas! Animal exhibits are free with museum admission and are open any time the museum is open.
