March is Women’s History Month, and there are plenty of events around NYC and nearby areas for kids and families to enjoy. 

From hands-on crafts and STEM activities to live performances and sports, these events highlight the important contributions women have made throughout history. 

It’s a great chance to learn more about and celebrate women’s achievements in a fun and engaging way this month!

Women’s History Month Kick-Off

Celebrate women of the past, present, and future all day long at the Morris-Jumel Mansion’s Women’s History Month Kick-Off! Drop in to experience multiple activations throughout the house featuring a live art demonstration by Andrea Arroyo, visual artist and creator of the special exhibition “Faces and Facades”, the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra, live readings by Poet Lisa “Rubi G” Ventura, and a talk by Margaret Oppenheimer, author of “The Remarkable Rise of Eliza Jumel” on the Women of the House during the Jumel’s residency.

Little New-Yorkers: The Girl Who Figured It Out: The Inspiring True Story of Wheelchair Athlete Minda Dentler Becoming an Ironman World Champion

March 4,-7, Tuesday and Friday, 3:30 – 4:30 pm

Included with admission: $6-$24; free for children 4 and younger

In 2013, Minda Dentler swam, biked, and ran to become the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Kona Ironman Triathlon in Hawai’i. In The Girl Who Figured It Out, written by Minda herself and illustrated by Stephanie Dehennin, you’ll find out just how Minda achieved this great feat! After the story, make your own medal craft to celebrate your accomplishments!

Girls in Science and Engineering Day

The 11th annual Girls in Science and Engineering Day is an annual festival that celebrates girls and young people actively engaging in STEM. This year the event is part of NASA Explore Day which encourages youth and their families to explore and connect with NASA missions through Museum-related content and NASA-generated educational activities. This event is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and explorers.

Enjoy a read-aloud of Andrea Beaty’s Rosie Revere, Engineer to hear how the kid- engineer Rosie uses household objects to invent her gadgets and gizmos. Can you do the same for skyscrapers? Learn about the role of engineers and then use your own creative mind to use everyday materials to build tall structures!

Athletes, Activists, Changemakers: Celebrate Women’s Stories at JRM

Jackie Robinson Museum, 75 Varick St., Soho

Ages 5 and older
Included with admission: $18; $15 seniors 65 and older, students with ID, and kids ages 5-17; free for children younger than 5

Celebrate the legacies of some of the phenomenal women—athletes, activists, changemakers—who influenced and inspired Jackie Robinson. Museum highlight tours and hands-on activities will introduce visitors of all ages to women such as Jackie’s mother Mallie Robinson, civic leader and educator Mary McLeod Bethune, activist Daisy Bates, team owner Effa Manley, tennis star Althea Gibson, collaborator Marian Logan, and of course Rachel and Sharon Robinson.

Saturday Family Storytime: Women’s History Month

STEAM Time: Women’s History Month

Join the library for an exciting, hands-on program dedicated to women in science. This month will feature famous women space explorers and mosaic artists by doing an activity. Create Paper Cup Planetariums (3/4) and Mosaic Art (3/18).

Art in Action! Women’s History Month Artists

Learn about famous female artists and recreate an inspired work of art in this weekly program.

Family Art Project: Garden Designs for Women’s History Month

Wave Hill, 675 W 252nd St., Riverdale
March 15-16, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am – 1 pm

Included with admission: $4-$10

Learn about women who have designed and cared for the gardens at Wave Hill in honor of Women’s History Month. With their work in mind,  make your own miniature creations inspired by places like community gardens and Wave Hill. At 11:30 am families can enjoy a storytime program in the Gund Theater, all ages welcome for a reading of the book In Our Garden by Pat Zietlow Miller.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Broadway accordionist and childhood music educator Mary Spencer Knapp takes us on a musical journey to meet some of the squeezebox’s most influential players from around the world. Learn about Creole zydeco music from Louisiana’s legendary Queen Ida, experimental music from the legacy of Pauline Oliveros and merengue tipico from Republica Dominicana’s Fefita La Grande!

This interactive magic has every jaw-dropping trick in the book and includes a twist! In celebration of Women’s History Month, you’ll learn about incredible women who were magicians and scientists. This is part magic show, as families work to create the magic by clapping, laughing, and saying the magic words – and part lesson, as each attendee will learn some magic that they will create right there in their hands.

Women in Science Spotlight: Elizabeth Knight Britton

During a time when women in science were rare, Elizabeth Knight Britton was an expert in bryology, the study of mosses. Learn about Elizabeth’s influence on science in Staten Island and New York City and what makes a moss, a moss! Join Colleen Evans, Director of Natural Science to learn more.

Join Staten Island Recreation for an event in celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day. We’ll have sports clinics in flag football, basketball, pickleball, fitness hula hoops, and Double Dutch, as well as a fitness class. Plus, the NYC Parks Robotics team will perform a live demonstration.

Girls in Science Night: Science Meets Technology

Cradle of Aviation Museum, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Garden City

Celebrate engineering wonders at Girls in Science Night! Dr. Rebecca Grella, a scientist and educator, will begin the evening by introducing her work in STEM education and research. Afterward, participants will rotate through four hands-on activity stations, each highlighting the connection between science and technology, earning the Cradle of Aviation Museum Girls in Science Patch.
