Mattel Introduces First-Ever Barbie Doll for Preschoolers

January 12, 2023 By Barbara Russo

There’s a new doll in the house! She’s My First Barbie, the first-ever Barbie doll specifically designed for preschool-aged children. Now how cool is that?

So, what makes My First Barbie different from the other Mattel-made gals? A lot! She’s bigger, softer and has more moveable arms and legs. She’s got a design that’s easier for younger kids to play with.

The idea for My First Barbie came after the Barbie brand learned that many parents, while interested in introducing their kids to the iconic doll, feel their pre-school aged daughters lack the fine motor skills to play independently with standard sized Barbie dolls.

“The insights we gain from Barbie’s open dialogue with parents is essential to our evolution, and the My First Barbie line is a perfect example of this approach in action,” Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, said. “From our research, we saw an opportunity to broaden our line with an offering specifically tailored to preschool-aged children to meet parents’ desire to introduce preschoolers to Barbie with a dedicated line.

McKnight added that the doll will also help enhance children’s creativity and imagination.

“My First Barbie doll’s larger and softer sculpt, easy-to-dress fashions and accessories and younger features will welcome even more children to play out any story they can dream of,”  she said.

Meet the First-Ever Barbie Doll for Preschoolers

My First Barbie is available across major retailers and features a full line of dolls and accessories. And, she’s available in four diverse skin tones. The doll features the same look and feel that Barbie fans know and love but is updated with larger accessories, easy-to-dress Velcro fashions, and a larger, soft doll body made for smaller hands and growing imaginations.

Additional features include:

  • Larger than a standard Barbie doll, standing at 13.5” inches compared to the standard 11.5 inches.
  • A softer body, more articulated arms and legs, closed hands, younger facial attributes, and long rooted hair – making it easier for younger children to hold and maneuver throughout play.
  • Easy-to-play accessories such as fashion packs, pets, bedroom play set and a teatime play set, all made for younger fans to expand storytelling themes young kids love.
  • The launch of My First Barbie will be followed by the first-ever Barbie content dedicated to preschool-aged children available on the Barbie YouTube channel Jan. 31.

Barbie was first born by Mattel in 1959. She continues to be one of the most popular dolls and iconic toys in the world.

My First Barbie sells for $19.99. Prices vary for her fun accessories and deluxe sets. Ready to shop for this new Barbie doll for preschoolers? Don’t forget to check out her cool styles, accessories and pets, too.
